As communications director for the Cheyenne River Youth Project, Heather Steinberger leads the organization’s external communications, including media relations, press releases, e-communications, social media messaging and storytelling. She also supports CRYP’s fundraising, outreach and development initiatives.
Heather’s relationship with CRYP began when she volunteered at The Main in the summer and fall of 2006. She joined the team in early 2007 as a fractional public relations manager and became communications director in 2023.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, Heather has more than 30 years of experience as a writer, editor and communications professional. Her career has included editorial positions with national and regional magazines, public relations work with nationally recognized advertising agencies, and nonprofit communications and public affairs.
Heather has operated her own independent communications business since 2004. An award-winning journalist, she continues to write for national and regional publications. Her work has appeared in titles such as Indian Country Today and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
Based in Beaufort, South Carolina, Heather works remotely with CRYP and travels to the Cheyenne River reservation throughout the year.
