Welcome back to our “Main Edition” of the CRYP Hall of Fame! This month, we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Hawk Eagle, who started attending youth programming at The Main this summer. Dexter is 7 years old, and he’s a second-grader at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Elementary School.
“I’ve been coming to The Main for about two months or something like that,” Dexter says. “My friend told me about it, and my older sister works there.”
Dexter’s favorite programs this summer included Garden Club, and The Main’s arts and crafts activities.
“Garden Club is great because you get to learn new things about food, and you get to pick it and eat it,” he explains. “And I like art—painting, and the other things we get to do with paint.”
While Dexter says he has learned a lot about growing your own food and about expressing himself through art, his biggest lesson was all about kindness.
“To be nice to the other kids,” he says, “and to have fun with them.”
Dexter says he’s looking forward to going to CRYP’s Cokata Wiconi teen center in a few years because he loves to play basketball and can’t wait to attend Midnight Basketball with the other teens. And after that?
“I want to become a cop,” he says with a grin. “And be a rich guy!”
