CRYP will host a free youth volleyball camp at the Cokata Wiconi (Center of Life) teen center this month. The Wakpa Wasté Volleyball Camp for 7th to 12th graders will take place on Thursday and Friday, July 12-13, with 7th-8th graders playing at 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 9th-12th graders playing at 1-3:30 p.m.
Lauren Schad will lead Volleyball Camp, which was made possible through the support of Nike’s N7 Fund. N7 reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to bring sport and all its benefits to Native American and aboriginal communities in the United States and Canada.
Schad, an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, has an impressive resume. Not only was she on the 2012 South Dakota Class AA All State 1st Team and the USA Collegiate National Team in 2015 and 2016, she was part of the professional French League A team in Chamalières, France, this past season.
And this 2018 Nike N7 Ambassador, who earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of San Diego, has been signed to the French League A team in Nantes for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
“We’re honored to have Lauren join us for this free, two-day volleyball camp,” said Jerica Widow, CRYP’s youth programs director. “To have someone with her level of experience and success teaching our children is a wonderful thing, and it will be even more special for them because she is a Lakota woman from Cheyenne River.”
