The Cheyenne River Youth Project announced today the official schedule of activities for RedCan 2021. This award-winning, nationally acclaimed invitational graffiti jam, the first and only event of its kind in Indian Country, kicks off next Wednesday, July 7 and runs through Saturday, July 10.

Twelve guest artists will attend RedCan 2021. They are: East, Biafra Inc., Wundr, Ryoe, Cyfi, Hoka, Scribe, 179, Siamese, Lawst, Lucid, Tsel, and Therd. Acclaimed Minneapolis-based hoop dancers and storytellers Lumhe and Samsoche Sampson — better known as the Sampson Brothers — will be in attendance as well, along with local drum group Wakinyan Maza, DJ Micah Prairie Chicken, and CRYP’s Lakota Dance Exhibition.

Wakinyan Maza will open and close each day of RedCan with a drum song and blessing. DJ Micah will spin tunes in the art park, and the Sampson Brothers will host youth workshops and a special performance for the community on Saturday evening.

Volunteer groups from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Ohio’s Ursuline College will be on hand to provide youth art activities at various locations in the community. They also will host special field day activities in CRYP’s Waniyetu Wowapi (Winter Count) Art Park each afternoon; themes will include sports, relay, and water, and children will enjoy time-honored staples such as the three-legged race, the egg toss, and tug of war.

CRYP staff and volunteers will be taking every precaution to ensure that this year’s RedCan graffiti jam is a safe one for the Cheyenne River community. All public activities will be held outdoors, and canopies will be provided to keep festival-goers out of the hot summer sun. When physical distancing is not possible, masking protocols will be in place.
