In an unprecedented year, the Cheyenne River Youth Project joined forces with artists, partners, and friends to create an innovative new version of its annual, award-winning RedCan invitational graffiti jam. Tonight, that remarkable experience will come to a close.
This final day of RedCan 2020 will incorporate a live broadcast from CRYP’s Waniyetu Wowapi (Winter Count) Art Park at 2:30 p.m. During this broadcast, staff members will provide youth with the paint, tape, and stencils they need to design their own skateboards. Youth also will have an opportunity to visit the mural site of Unalee Howe, a Cheyenne River-based RedCan artist who is creating a large-scale artwork in the park.
Tonight is the grand finale: At 6:30 p.m. Mountain time, RedCan 2020 murals will formally be unveiled to the public in eight cities nationwide: Denver; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Seattle; Kansas City, Missouri; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Rapid City, Pine Ridge, and Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Afterward, at 7:30 p.m. Mountain time, viewers will enjoy a special performance by Midnight Express at the Minneapolis mural site, as well as a talking circle with RedCan artists East, 179, Biafra, Chief, Collins, Cyfi, Dwayno Insano, Hoka, Sadat, Scribe, Unalee Howe, and Wundr, all of whom will be broadcasting live from their home communities.
What’s more, this year’s featured artists have created original, limited-edition prints inspired by their RedCan 2020 murals. These prints will be available for purchase through CRYP’s website as soon as the murals are unveiled, and according to Youth Arts Director Tyler Read, interested buyers must act quickly.
“We’ve only created 20 copies of each print, so they’re absolutely limited edition,” Read explained. “They are collector’s items, produced on high-quality archival paper. And proceeds will benefit CRYP’s programming and services, with every contribution making a real difference in the lives of Cheyenne River’s young people.”
