From Sioux Falls to Eagle Butte: A Journey of Service and Connection!

What an incredible adventure for The Point is to Serve Youth Group! Five eager members and three adults kicked off their journey from Sioux Falls, heading to Pierre on Friday, June 6. They explored the Capitol, enjoyed a meal at Zesto, and spent the night at First Lutheran Church. Bright and early on Saturday, they hit the road for Eagle Butte.

Imagine their excitement when a majestic bald eagle glided across the road right in front of them as they crossed the Cheyenne River — what a breathtaking welcome!

They met Dalton Fischer, CRYP’s gardener and facilities manager, around 9 a.m. and immediately got to work after drenching themselves in bug spray. Dalton led them on a tour of the garden, emphasizing the vital importance of food sovereignty for Cheyenne River. Some of the youth helped paint signs, while others dove into planting cabbage, melons and peppers. It was a truly enriching experience as they learned about Dalton’s passion for gardening, inspired by his grandpa’s work ethic.

Around 11 a.m., Dalton surprised them with delicious jam samples right in the garden — a delightful treat! Their visit to CRYP concluded with a stop at the gift shop, where each kid, with their $10 limit, picked out special souvenirs like keychains, apple butter, a turtle and an eagle. Dalton even shared extra seedlings and seeds with their most enthusiastic gardener, offering planting tips for home. This visit was a truly memorable connection and a highlight of their trip!

To unwind, they visited the skatepark and enjoyed a showing of Lilo & Stitch at 7th Generation Cinema in Eagle Butte. On Sunday morning, they started their journey home around 10 AM, filled with new memories and experiences.

The youth group offers its gratitude to Pastor Ben for providing a comfortable night’s rest on the floor of First Baptist Church, and it extends a heartfelt thanks to everyone who made them feel so welcome and taught them so much. The Point is to Serve Youth Group also offers an open invitation: You’re always welcome to be their guests in Sioux Falls!
